Well i'm not really sure if this is allowed but i've looked through the info on Sew Mama Sew's giveaway day page and there doesn't seem to be anything saying that I can't do 2 giveaways so that is what i'm going to do! Welcome to everyone thats headed here from Sew Mama Sew, giveaway day is fun huh?

If you're looking for giveaway no.1 (a pretty little pouch) then head over here

This giveaway falls into a different category which I why I have done a separate post for it.

It has a bit of selvedge action going on

A hint of Lu Summers hand screen printed fabric

Some Japanese prints and some hand quilting

So here it is, a cushion or as its called in the States, a pillow

This giveaway is open to international entries and all you have to do to enter is leave me a comment telling me a good photography tip (I think my new years resolution is going to be to work on my photography skills to improve the photos on my blog)

My lovely followers will get an extra chance so leave a separate comment

The winning comment will be drawn randomly and the winner will be notified by email. The cushion will come without an inner to make it easier to post. Good luck and hope to see you back here in the future, now head over to Sew Mama Sew for all of those giveaways!

Yikes! I am not too good myself on photography, but I like to use natural light and the macro setting on my camera, as it defines texture, it seems.

Lindsay Conner said...

Natural light! :)

The only photography tip I have is that you should never stop snapping--great things can come if you just don't give up. Even if it means an extra 500 photos. :P Thanks for the nice giveaway, and Happy Holidays!

Jagels said...

Rule of thirds, don't center your object, put it off to one side, either at the right or left or top or bottom. thansk.

Having a tripod or something to set the camera on is very important, and lighting!!

Use natural sunlight as much as possible and try painting a board for a back drop to use for small projects ( you cam even paint both sides different colours for more choice) .

Deb said...

Great pillow! I have no photo tips...I stink at taking pictures. I do want to try making a light box and see if that helps for my smaller projects. Thanks for the chance!

Katy said...

Don't use the flash! Wait for the natural light as tempting as it may be.

What a cute pillow!
My tip: make your photos outside on a bright but not to sunny day. That gives the best colors.
Have a nice Christmastime,

I would use a tripod for steadiness.

What a beautiful pillow! Ok, my best photography tip is to remember to take the lens cap off. He he, as you can tell, I don't take pictures very much. :)

Amy said...

Lovely pillow/ cushion! My best photography tip is super basic -- natural life whenever possible.

Kristi said...

My photography tip: lots of practice, and don't be afraid to make mistakes! Oh, and photo editing can go a long way toward making an Ok photo a great one!

Beautiful pillow!!! And very generous of you to offer 2 gifts! Light is the biggest factor (to me), so outdoor pics or in front of a suuny window with a reflector (even if it's just aluminum foil on cardboard) are best. But I am no expert, hopefully some of the real photographers will leave their comments.

ellesquare said...

I photograph everything next to a window to get the best natural/indirect light. Thanks for hosting this giveaway -- your pillow is lovely!

Natural light is the best!

Well honestly I'm a useless photographer. II usually get something in the background that shouldn't be there, so my tip is to check first.
Thanks for the chance to win this lovely cushion

Just Charming said...

My tip (although I'm not a great photographer) is to get to know your camera. I'm trying to take pictures of my Christmas tree and am learning about aperture and such.

The pillow is lovely :) thanks for the chance to win.

SavvyGirlDeborah said...

I like to wait for the mid-afternoon sun to come through the windows. The light goes across my subject rather directly down on it.

Sherrie said...

I've focused more on the micro details (a face for instance) rather than the macro landscape (the body for instance). Our family pictures have been much more interesting and telling.

Jessica said...

i'm not a very good photography but i think good lighting is key. the cushion (pillow) is lovely! thanks for the chance to win!

Using a reflector to improve the light on whatever you are photographing (anything large and white will do - even a sheet stretched over an old frame. Also means a nice even light, no shadows.

i love this adorable and colorful cushion cover! nicely done.
as for the photo-taking tips, i'm an amateur myself, but i must say that practice, practice and more practice has helped me to learn what i do and don't like about my pics. take lots of them and you'll eventually find at least one that works! thanks again and have a great day!

My tip is to get someone other than myself to take the photos!! Hubby takes better ones than I do!

My tip would be to get someone else to take the photograph ! Or take classes. I am a terrible photographer and would LOVE to get better as well.

Thank you for taking part in Giveaway Day and for offering such an awesome goodie! The cushion is really lovely!

As for photos...oof...I'm still working on that, myself. Natural light is good. Clear close-ups are good. Not-buy backgrounds are good. Taking photos with preschool aged helpers...tricky. And that's about all I know on the subject. :)

Take photos outdoors when possible. And use a tripod if you have one.

Pretty pillow.

I tried to post last night, but ended up leaving only some punctuation!
Best photo tips: 1. Natural lighting whenever possible, and 2. Don't be afraid to zoom in even closer! It will make you pics even more dynamic and add to the wow factor that makes viewers linger as they glance at your blog page. Just think of Georgia O'Keefe's super close-up flower paintings!
But your pictures already show a lot of detail, they are really nicely set up, and you palette is gorgeous! I love you pillows and your use of the selvage!

tammi said...

Such a cute pillow, My tip came from my brotherin law who is a photographer. The light is best for portraits in the Early morning, by mid morning the light is too bright and glaring.

Nilmerg said...

That is a beautiful cushion cover. I love how you have used the selvedge in the border.

fotohok said...

I read through all of the tips so I could share something new for you. Just one? All cameras are made to make everything in your photo look like middle grey. The tone halfway between white and black. People and things are not that tone. Most are lighter or darker. You need to trick your camera into getting the tone you want. You want your whites to look white and your colors to look right. Most camera's now days have a great auto setting. If yours doesn't seem to turn out how you'd like, see if you have any adjusting capabilities. Changing the exposure, white balance, "film" speed and other things.
Your other best friend will be any photo processing software from Windows, photoshop, elements to anything. Most of their auto correctors will do a pretty good job.
I'd be glad to help with any other photo questions you have, if you'd like.

Njeri said...

A tripod helps, unless you can hold your hands really still.

Good configuration on the photo setting..

What a great pillow!! I am not much of a photographer so I don't really have a good tip for you. Thanks for the giveaway. Love your blog.

Very cute. I think one of the best tips I got was, if using a digital camera, take a bunch of pictures from just slightly different angles and locations. It's amazing how much change you can get in a picture by just taking a single step in any direction, or crouching down, standing on something, etc.

Sadly, I am not a good source for photography tips. I use a point and shoot camera, and I find that everything looks better without the flash if you can possibly get away with it. I love the pillow! Merry Christmas!

Hmmm, I am not a very good photographer so I all I have to offer is that when you are photographing people just be sure to make it fun and relaxed. You get much better smiles that way (from both adults and kiddos). Thanks so much for the chance at your lovely pillow. I am not much of a handstitcher so I admire your work. Smiles~Beth

our photos got so much better when we got a lens with a low enough apeture we could go without the flash.

Tip: Click snaps preferably in the sun. If you are indoors try and click them in yellow light. They looks awesome, especially if its food photography. Fabric colours might look different in yellow light.

I love your pillow (or cushion as you call it)! My best photography tip is that on some cameras if you push down slightly on the shutter button this will bring your subject into focus and then you can continue to push all the way down to take the picture.

Anonymous said...

Your cushion is so beautiful!!
I always prefer using natural light, but it's really hard this time of year - it seems to get dark as soon as I get the camera out!

My best photography tip is to learn how to use the manual settings on your camera, if they exist. I have a point-and-shoot with a few options, and once I learned how to use them things improved dramatically! Most important to me was the white balance.

Thanks for the chance at such a lovely pillow!

What a fabulous, adorable, stunning pillow!!

What I'm learning about photography, sadly, is to avoid taking pictures of dogs! Just kidding! Actually, my Sophie and Zoey are teaching me that I need to keep talking to them and to use treats and maintain eye contact to get the perfect pet photo!

Thanks for this great giveaway chance!

When I'm trying to take pictures indoors (in winter for instance when I'm away at work during daylight), I turn on every lamp I can find and also adjust the brightness on my camera to the point my shot is almost overexposed looking - it usually looks pretty good when I upload and only needs a little more tweaking.
